Information for Prospective Skaters:
The Steel City Derby Demons are looking for a few good women! If you’re interested in becoming a derby girl and skating with us, we will be holding tryouts on Sunday, March 7, 2010.
Potential skaters must be female, at least 21 years old, and have solid skating skills. In order to try out, you must attend a pre-tryout bootcamp in order to get a better grasp on what we are all about.
The pre-tryout bootcamp is Saturday, February 20 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Contact us at joinSCDD@gmail.com to register for the bootcamp. You may not attend the bootcamp unless you register!!!
Other requirements: Skaters must wear safety gear including helmet, mouth guard, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads. Rental skates and pads will be available at the rink at no cost if needed but our pad supply is limited so if you have equipment of your own, please bring it! Affordable mouth guards can be purchased at any sporting goods store.
Key basic skills covered during the tryout include:
- Derby Form/Stance
- Endurance
- Stopping (3 basic types)

There will be a $5 Rink Fee and Photo ID is required. Skaters must sign a waiver prior to participating.

We take our training very seriously. Many skaters are on the rink 2 times a week or more. Recruits must be aware that roller derby can be life consuming (but rewarding).

The Steel City Derby Demons are excited that you are interested in becoming a referee for our league. As a professional league we do have a screening process that we require for all volunteers. This screening process involves the completion of an application and an interview process with a league committee. Please read through referee requirements and then fill out the application.
Requirements:
- We are a DIY all-women roller derby league that is run by the skaters, for the skaters. We are not paid to skate, but instead we pay dues and volunteer our time and money to be part of this league. All referee positions are volunteer only and you will not receive a wage or salary for this service.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain insurance through USA Roller Sports (USARS) regardless if you have your own health insurance. USARS is a roller sports health insurance service and will require a yearly payment. All of our derby sakters are required to carry USARS or WFTDA insurance.
- You will be required to attend practices and skate with the Steel City Derby Demons. At practice you will be required to use referee knowledge to assist coaches and with scrimmages.
- You will be required to learn the official Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rules, and base official calls on knowledge of these rules.
- You will be required to remove personal biases from your official calls and no discriminate based on gender, sexual orientation, race, nepotism, or religion.
- You will be required to take advice and follow decisions from head referees and the training committee
- You will be aware of and follow the Steel City Derby Demons bylaws for operation.
- During the official season once the schedule is set, you will need to be available for bouts. Depending on the amount of referees, an attendance policy will be set and a minimum attendance requirement will need to be fullfilled.
