by Michael Frighten’d

Pittsburgh, PA — The Steel City Derby Demons welcomed the Ithaca League of Women Rollers to Romp ‘n’ Roll in Glenshaw, PA for a pair of bouts. In the main event, the SufferJets of the City of Gorges took on the Steel Hurtin’, coming off a close first loss of the season to the Naptown Roller Girls, who remain undefeated at Indianapolis Pepsi Coliseum. The Steel Hurtin’ rebounded in a big way against the SufferJets for a dominating final score of 393-91. In the opener, B-Unit stretched their winning streak to 4 games continued from last season, defeating the BlueStockings in a tough back-and-forth bout, 157-97. Though they took the losses in both bouts, Ithaca showed tenacity, good sportsmanship, and class throughout the entire 120 minutes.

If you had witnessed 75% of the BlueStockings’ bout with B-Unit, you might have thought the Ithaca ladies had the match well in hand. Indeed, except for a 40-point powerjam sandwich around halftime and a late Steel City run for 10 minutes of the second half, Ithaca would have taken the close-matched victory. The bout consisted of many one-and-done or even none-and-done quick jams – 46 all told – and until the end, very few jammer penalties. In the fourth jam of the night, Ha Ha Hatchet Fits put a quick move through the inside as her BlueStocking teammates ShankHer Woman and Motley Crouton teamed up on McShovin, to change a 4-1 B-Unit lead to a 10-4 for Ithaca. Two jams later, River Kyx bounced off Planne B as Auntie Establishment laid some great blocks to hold the pack back, and B-Unit recaptured a 14-10 lead. Looking to stretch it, Public Emily outsped Cold War for lead, only to get taken out in her scoring pass by first Cold War and then ShankHer Woman who drew a low block jammer penalty. Felonious Fox was unable to capitalize on the first powerjam of the night, however, as Eradikate and Tower O’Terror delivered punishing hits to Cold War on the outside. Scoring stayed low and with just under 13 minutes remaining, B-Unit led 25-17.

Ha Ha Hatchet Fits, with fast moves and a whip from Planne B, brought the BlueStockings closer by 4, in the midst of an 11-out-of-14 lead jam streak for Ithaca. Cold War got another 3 as Killah’ Watts, ShankHer Woman, and Mad ScienceFist trapped London Blitz in the back and it was only a one-point game. River Kyx answered, following a clearing block from Tower O’Terror on the inside, to win a 4-0. Ha Ha Hatchet Fits then employed the crazy feet strategy around Mission Impassible for lead jam, then took out her opposite, London Blitz in her scoring pass but unfortunately also drew a penalty setting up B-Unit’s first powerjam. London Blitz fought off big hits from Planne B and Killah’ Watts to win the jam, 9-4 and give B-Unit a 10-point lead. With just under 7 minutes to go in the half, Felonious Fox took out River Kyx and drew a penalty in the process. Despite excellent efforts from Mission Impassible and Busty Brawler, Sugar Blitz was able to use the Ithaca powerjam to score 14 and give her teammates a 42-41 lead which looked to be intact for the break. But in the final jam of the half, London Blitz sped past Motley Crouton as Auntie Establishment forced a track cut by Sugar Blitz. London Blitz won the battle of the blitzes this round, speeding around the stopped pack for a sudden 25 points and a 69-47 lead as the whistle blew.

B-Unit struck again as the second half began. River Kyx blasted between Sugar Blitz and Mad ScienceFist for lead jammer and then, armed with a powerjam, set out to score big. A good block from Mad ScienceFist recycled her to the back of the pack but Miss Ill killed the Ithaca front wall, freeing River Kyx for a 15-point run. In two jams, B-Unit had completely undone all the good work the BlueStockings had done throughout the bout, and led now 84-47. Not dismayed, however, Ithaca began to slowly bring themselves back into the game. As the boxes filled, Felonious Fox put on a nice apex jump and dodged around Busty Brawler for 8 points. Several jams later, Bunny LeBoutski shook off a big hit from MILFshake to stay in bounds and add on another 5. Soon after, Planne B cleared a scoring pass for Cold War and the red-headed blue-clad jammer added 4 more to end a 19-5 run for Ithaca to close the gap to 13 points with just under 18 minutes to go. That was as close as B-Unit let them get, however.

Good bridging by Inna Gadda da Beatcha allowed Busty Brawler and Tower O’Terror to hold the front wall long enough for Public Emily to dodge her way to a 4-0. Two jams later, London Blitz battled past Felonious Fox for a pair of natural grand slams and 12 points as Busty Brawler and River Kyx led a shutout of Cold War. Auntie Establishment bird-dogged Killah’ Watts who wound up tripping Public Emily at the end of her 5-0 jam. London Blitz, in the ensuing powerjam, split the front wall for 9. Miss Ill cleared the front, taking out two BlueStocking blockers as McShovin scored a 4-0. Inna Gadda Da Beatcha drove Ha Ha Hatchet Fits out of bounds into a track cut and Public Emily added another 9 in the powerjam despite the efforts of Felonious Fox at damage control. Finally, London Blitz continued the powerjam, and added 5 to an extremely successful 7-jam, 48-0, 10-minute run by B-Unit. With five minutes to go, the home team had doubled up their opponents, 143-70. That was essentially the last nail in the coffin. Though Cold War and River Kyx traded 13-point powerjams and Ha Ha Hatchet Fits added a 10-point powerjam of her own, time had run out for another comeback. B-Unit took the tough win 157-97.

The Steel Hurtin’s match against the SufferJets of the Ithaca League of Women Rollers ended up as expected, with a strong win by Pittsburgh in all aspects of the bout over the unranked Ithaca team. The first half was dominated by the Steel City blockers. The team effort, led especially by Athena, J-Bomb, and the Maestro, kept the Ithaca jammers from lead in all but two of nineteen jams and shutting them out in all but six. Meanwhile the Steel Hurtin’ jammers were able to lap the pack, running up huge scores, despite only having two powerjams in the half. The pace was set from the very first whistle as Athena led the rear defense with punishing blocks against Gunder n Lightning as Hurricane Heather shot through the battleship-grey Ithaca pack for a 19-3 jam. ‘snot rocket science followed up with 9 as Ally McKill held AKT*47 at the front of the pack. Two jams later, the Ithaca jammer fooled everyone. AKT*47 shot through the stopped pack as if no other skaters knew the jam had started to win a 1-0 and bring the score to 32-4. ‘snot rocket science put a sweet spin move around Tuff Mama to run up another 19 points. Gunder n Lightning tried to equal her, having nicely kept her balance after rebounding from a hit from Double Destroyer. But she found herself at the mercy of the Maestro, however, who kept her under wraps for the jam. With the score 68-4, CamArrow tried to rally the SufferJet defense, keeping Mean Burrito in the pack for a full minute, but as the midpoint of the half approached, things got out-of-hand for Ithaca.

As J-Bomb battled to force Pink E. Racer to the outside, Hurricane Heather, sneaky as a thief, slipped through a gap of inches behind Pink E. Racer’s back and began a 24-point run around the track. Pink E. Racer, frustrated in the back of the pack, successfully completed a star pass to AKT*47 whose leap to daylight was blocked by Ally McKill’s positioning, setting up the first powerjam of the bout. ‘snot rocket science then put on a show in the following jam, sliding low past two cross-track blocks at once, then splitting a front wall of CamArrow and Tuff Mama, on her way to 30 points and a 124-4 lead for Steel City. BeeBee Gunn, MaMadusa, Ovarian Cyster, and Lisbeth SaLAM’Dher got some revenge back, controlling Mean Burrito, as Gunder n Lightning escaped the pack for a 6-4 win. But Bonecrusher, J-Bomb, and the Maestro reasserted control, keeping CamArrow in the pack the following jam while Cheeseburger racked up 14. Then, there was a delay as Ithaca’s Momo-A-Gogo sustained an injury and headed to the E.R. for examination. The action continued with Cheeseburger bringing in another 10 as Athena continued her terrorism of AKT*47 taking both her and her jam ref out with a big blow. CamArrow pulled some good jammer-on-jammer defense, forcing a minor cut from Mean Burrito to keep her from lead, then fought her way past Lady Vengeance and J-Bomb for 8 points. Unfortunately, she was not able to get lead either, and Mean Burrito recovered for 13 herself. The half ended with a promising-looking jam for Ithaca. BeeBee Gunn put a good block on ‘snot rocket science but Double Destroyer answered by drawing a back block from Gunder n Lightning. ‘snot rocket science raced around the track, stopping and starting through gaps in the pack again and again and finished with another 30-point jam, taking her up to 96 first-half points, which paced the team to a 206-21 halftime lead.

In the second half, more jams went the full two minutes and the play got a lot looser. In the second jam, Cheeseburger skated her way to 24 points without the aid of a powerjam thanks the strong work of her blockers. J-Bomb rode CamArrow out of bounds but was then blocked hard herself by MaMadusa. But the Crippler recycled CamArrow all the way to the back of the pack and the Ithaca star-bearer was only able to cash in 3 points for the two minutes. AKT*47 was able to dodge hits from Athena and Bonecrusher to score 9 for Ithaca but not enough to equal the speedy Hurricane Heather’s 17. Trying their luck with a new jammer, Thunder Vittles toed the line but was forced into a track cut on turn two. Mean Burrito battled and spun her way for 22 points until she was called for a back block at the end of her jam with the score 273-42. CamArrow capitalized on the powerjam, but only for 5 points, as J-Bomb held her back with great one-on-one blocking for forty-five seconds. As the midpoint of the half arrived, penalties began to lighten the packs. Gunder n Lightning’s superb balance kept her in-bounds after big hits and she was able to go point-for-point with Cheeseburger for 15.

The free skating, open floor, big hit style brought with it a sudden scare to the packed house in attendance. As ‘snot rocket science battled another new jammer, Lisbeth SaLAM’Dher, to a 21-12 “Rush”ed jam, one of Athena’s big booty blocks resulted in a loud cry of pain from the Steel Hurtin’ star. Lisbeth SaLAM’Dher went to the box and Athena limped off the track and did not appear for the rest of the bout. Mean Burrito then used the powerjam to pad on another 22 points to the 332-75 lead. The gap stayed about that until with 5 minutes left, ‘snot rocket science entertained the crowd with another display of agility, spinning and winning through a powerjam for 25 points. Cheeseburger ended the night looking to crack the 400 barrier but a penalty after time had expired put an end to that. Still, the Steel Hurtin’s four jammers had a good night for increasing their season stats: Hurricane Heather, Cheeseburger, and Mean Burrito all broke the 80-point barrier individually and ‘snot rocket science wound up her night with 143. The never-say-die SufferJets toughed out the bout and turned in a stronger performance in the second half but the gap was too much to overtake and Steel Hurtin’ took the win, 393-91.

The Steel City Derby Demons travelled to Indianapolis for a “Sting Time” event, taking on the Naptown Rollergirls. After 6 hours of travel plus pit-stops, they arrived at the massive venue—usually reserved for hockey but all roller derby on this day—at the Indiana State Fair Grounds. As the Blitzburgh Bombers took the rink against the Naptown Warning Belles, the Naptown crowd was all boos, but out of the faint corner of the arena the Steel Hurtin’ yelled their lungs out for a just audible roar. This opening bout was hard fought and slippery with a final score of 155-97, going to the Warning Belles. In the main event, the crowd still growing and even louder, but the Blitzburgh Bombers, in a showing of league solidarity and support, set-up rink side for the loudest, bell-ringing cheering section Naptown had ever seen. The Steel Hurtin’ battled Naptown’s Tornado Sirens with heart and talent, but in the end the victory went to the Sirens for a final score of 180-135.

This pair of losses is just one moment for Steel City and now they’re back to training and practice to prepare for another bout on April 21st against Ithaca. After a loss like this, Ithaca better prepare for a rally.Tweet

Last night the B-Unit traveled to Akron, OH to take on the Little Steel Derby Girls of Youngstown. You may remember the Little Steel girls from last season, when they defeated the Blitzburgh Bombers in the SCDD 2011 home opener. The score back then was 113 – 155 in Little Steel’s favor. This year, the B-Unit sought revenge for their league mates and achieved it, handily beating the Youngstown team 53 to 183. Vicious Virus won MVP blocker for the game, and London Blitz won MVP jammer, as voted upon by Little Steel. This game featured the glorious derby debuts of River Kyx, Wreck Defy, and Stark Raven.

This makes three victories for Steel City in 2012 so far, which means we are undefeated!Tweet

Pittsburgh, PA — The Steel City Derby Demons kicked off the 2012 season this St. Patrick’s Day, taking on the Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls from Bloomington, Indiana. The day of celebration began with an unseasonably warm morning for thousands of green-clad revelers downtown and ended with a mid-seasonably victorious evening for scores of gold-and-black-clad Derby fans at Romp ‘n’ Roll in Glenshaw. In the opening bout, the Blitzburgh Bombers took on the Code Blue Assassins and fought off a strong last-minute comeback to hold onto a 104-95 victory. In the main event, the Steel Hurtin’ battled the Bleeding Heartland Rollergirl Flatliners and came away with a dominating 295-107 win. Questions surrounding off-season turnover were answered tonight. In posting the two victories, the 2012 Steel City Derby Demons, with strong contributions from skaters making their bout debuts and others returning from injuries, answered the call for hopes of another exciting season.

The new-look Blitzburgh Bombers came out on the track tonight with five rookies: Ada Bloodlace, Daley Dose, Hot Lips Bruise’ihan, Oscar De La Hurtya, and REO Speedwagon; plus two skaters returning from long injuries: Helen Fire and Elsie Thudd. Helen Fire made her presence felt from the start, speeding on the outside around Scarlet Witch’s block for a quick 5-0 lead for the Bombers. The Code Blue Assassins answered with a 5-0 of their own as Dare E. Eryn put a quick move on RedRuM Blur and found herself with a powerjam chance to take the lead. But a big recycling block by Inga Knee’her slowed her down and then the Bloomington jammer went to the box herself. On the following jam, Helen Fire took advantage of the powerjam, following a clearing block by Whiskey Mick to open up the Bombers’ lead to 9 points. Hot Lips Bruise’ihan was able to win an 8-5 jam over Dirt Diggler. Ada Bloodlace followed with 8 of her own after recovering from a big hit from Scarlet Witch which knocked the Bloomington skater out of the game. Defense was strong for both packs leading to long, low-scoring jams throughout the half. The Bombers’ containment strategy, led by pivot Whiskey Mick and good work from Daley Dose and Elsie Thudd, proved to be slightly more effective than the takeout-style big blocks of Bleeding Heartland as Squirrely Shirley and Uh Huh Hurricane made life miserable for the Steel City jammers. As time crossed the midpoint of the first half, the Bombers held a small 35-19 lead.

The Code Blue Assassins missed an opportunity to bring the game closer getting shut out in their next three powerjams with great penalty-killing by Inga Knee’her, Groovy Hott Lovey Cakes, and Whiskey Mick while the rotation of Helen Fire, Ada Bloodlace, and RedRuM Blur methodically added to the lead until it sat at 56-25 with only 2 minutes remaining in the half. The Code Blue Assassins struck back quickly and fiercely, however. Dirt Diggler shot through the center of the pack for a quick 5-0. Then, as the bodies started flying and the penalty box filled, Aceta Menacin’ capitalized on the light pack powerjam for 14 points and suddenly it was only a 56-44 game at the break.

When play resumed, Dirt Diggler used the last moments of the continued powerjam to get another 7 and a lead change was in sight. The Bombers rallied behind Helen Fire, however, who used her size and speed to dodge around Mauls Dolls and with the bonus of a powerjam, scored 15 to stretch the score back up to 73-51. Uh Huh Hurricane continued her relentless work in the back of the pack to shut down Inga Knee’her and Mae Kim Hurl got 3 back for Bloomington. But Elsie Thudd and RedRuM Blur answered with strong rear defense of their own, continually driving Aceta Menacin’ and Mauls Dolls off the track while REO Speedwagon fought through big blocks from Manda Runyon and Squirrely Shirley to score 10 and give the Bombers a 35-point lead. As the 15-minute mark arrived, Dirt Diggler began a jam alone on the line. She then shot around the track as her blockers kept the pack at a standstill, racking up 11 points to Ada Bloodlace’s 3 to narrow the score to 94-65.

Helen Fire then found herself in the same position but amazing blocking from Uh Huh Hurricane kept the Blitzburgh Bomber in the pack for over a minute and Dirt Diggler was able to return from the box and grab lead and another 4 points. Two textbook 4-0′s by Aceta Menacin’ brought the score to 94-77 with just under 8 minutes remaining. Then, a miscommunication on the Steel City bench caused them to have no jammer on the floor when the next jam began. Dare E. Eryn took advantage of the error to rack up 15 points over the full two minutes and suddenly it was only 94-92 with 5 minutes remaining. Helen Fire increased the lead to 6, setting up the key jam of the bout. Both teams’ blockers worked furiously to keep the opposing jammers from getting control. The Code Blue Assassins worked a nice trap of Groovy Hott Lovey Cakes in the back just as REO Speedwagon was sent to the box with her fourth minor. Dirt Diggler could not take advantage of this tactical mistake by the Bombers, however, as Groovy Hott Lovey Cakes and Elsie Thudd alternated clutch waterfall blocks to the outside and Bleeding Heartland came out of the two-minute jam with no points. With a minute and a half left, Helen Fire skated quickly to grab lead and seemingly seal the victory. Wisely playing it safe through the pack and not risking a penalty, Helen Fire seemed content to win the 5-3 jam but she called it off with 20 seconds remaining. The Bleeding Heartland bench was quick to use a timeout and set up one last chance to win. Groovy Hott Lovey Cakes was again able to counter a mental mistake with a physical act, capturing lead and icing the 104-95 victory, but not before letting a few more nail-biting seconds tick by after the time-ending whistle.

Unlike the first, the outcome of the second bout of the night was never much in doubt. Steel Hurtin’s Hurricane Heather cracked the scoreboard goose eggs with 12 points in the second jam as Bonecrusher continually recycled Nuck L. Sammie leading a two-minute shutout of the Flatliners. Mostly Harmless and Bobbi McGuillotine showed the Shocker that they can play tough defense too as Kaka Caliente got Bleeding Heartland on the board with 3 in the next jam. The rough play began to fill up the penalty boxes early and often as Steel Hurtin’ opened up a commanding lead. ‘snot rocket science slashed through the diminishing packs for 8. Then back-and-forth jammer forearm calls netted a 14-1 powerjam win to Mean Burrito over Shock ‘n Roll, following big clearing blocks from Athena. Hurricane Heather then lapped the lightened pack four times for 19 more. With a quarter of the bout in the books, Steel City led 55-12.

Four minors to Nuck L. Sammie set the Shocker up with a powerjam, albeit at gut-wrenching speeds, which the speedy jammer toughed out for 20 points. ‘snot rocket science’s sudden stops and spurts of acceleration threw off the timing of the Bleeding Heartland blockers and drew acclaim from the crowd along with 9 more points and Steel Hurtin’ led 84-13. After adding on another 5, Mean Burrito headed to the box and Kaka Caliente showed that the Flatliners weren’t about to roll over, fighting her way for 9 through a strong front wall of Cheeseburger, Madame Abagael, and Maestro, who made her return this night from a tough injury. Nuck L. Sammie then continued the powerjam for 10 more as Mean Burrito returned to the track only to go right back to the sin bin after a back block. Bobbi McGuillotine was unable to continue the run, however, as she was confounded by a spinning block from ‘snot rocket science. Mean Burrito skated with renewed momentum to rack up another 16. The next jam, strangely, Bleeding Heartland’s blockers did not cross the line to release the jammers for an entire minute. Afterward, Kaka Caliente put some good moves around Bonecrusher to get lead but her team was out of time to score. The Steel Hurtin’ blockers then kept Uh Huh Hurricane in the goat pen for most of a two-minute jam while the Shocker rattled off 26 more points. The half whistle blew ending the parade of big hits and small packs with the score 140-45.

The second half continued much as the first as good individual defensive performances from the Flatliners, such as Mostly Harmless’s good work on Hurricane Heather in the initial jam of the half, wound up still resulting in an increase in the Steel Hurtin’s lead as Hurricane Heather’s mere 8 were balanced against a shutout of Kaka Caliente by the Steel City pack. Five jams in, after a 10-4 Hurricane Heather-Kaka Caliente matchup, the packs finally seemed to be at full strength and the score was 166-54. Mean Burrito then slashed and plowed her way to 17 unanswered points as Shock ‘n Roll could not evade the wall of J-Bomb, Maestro, and the Crippler. Mostly Harmless and Doc Doc Noose answered with good teamwork on the Shocker as Nuck L. Sammie won a 9-5 battle despite not having lead jammer. The packs began to lighten up again as jams were skated out to full lengths, which played to Steel Hurtin’s advantage as Hurricane Heather outraced Kaka Caliente 16-8. The Crippler, ‘snot rocket science, and Double Destroyer killed off a Mean Burrito penalty, keeping Nuck L. Sammie to only 4 points and then drew their own jammer call, which Mean Burrito gobbled up for 18. With just a quarter to go, the score was now 225-75.

Bleeding Heartland continued fighting, putting on a 10-3 run featuring good defense by Shifty McGee and good moves by Nuck L. Sammie around Athena. The Shocker then skated the inside line on one leg, to win a 15-8 jam versus Shock ‘n Roll despite a 1-4 pack disadvantage. As more whistles filled the air two jams later, the Shocker intelligently slowed down on her approach to the stopped pack and kept a powerjam going for 25 more points, giving her 93 unofficially on the night. Then, for a final treat, ‘snot rocket science did one of those amazing and creative moves only the Team USA stalwart seems to be able to come up with. Coming up behind a Flatliner 3-wall, she suddenly cut cross-track left, drawing the left end out, then cut right on a dime as the blocker fell trying to keep up. She did the same on the right side and suddenly the 3-wall was a 1-wall with no contact made and she skated freely through, ending up with another 21 points. In the final jam of the night Nuck L. Sammie got 10 back on a powerjam to get Bleeding Heartland over the century mark making the final score 295-107.Tweet
