The Steel City Derby Demons are kicking off our season with a roller derby battle to prove once and for all if love is eternal, or if everything is bound for ash and dust.

The SCDD will split ourselves into two teams: The Hopeless Romantics vs. The Blackhearts. Pick your side and cheer them on!

When: Sunday, February 5th

Time: 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm, with a special skate session afterward, all derby spectators are invited to participate!

Where: Romp n’ Roll Skating Rink 1661 E. Sutter Rd, Glenshaw, PA 15116

Price: $5 for singles, $8 for couples

The Steel City Derby Demons family would like to extend an enormous thank you to everyone who came out to “A Black Eye Affair” last night.  The event was the biggest fundraiser that the SCDD has held to date and most notably Elsie Thudd, Athena, and Dresta Kill were instrumental in its planning and execution.  Visitors admired and bid on many wonderful works of art including paintings, sculpture, pottery, pen and ink drawings, photography, jewelry, stained glass, needlework and more.  Bartenders La Diabla and J-Bomb mixed drinks, B.B. Basher served as emcee, and guests ate delicious food donated by our generous sponsors.  By the end of the night, every piece of art was sold.

Thank you to all of the food sponsors, drink sponsors, volunteers, artists who donated their work, skaters and refs who helped work the event, companies who donated items for the Chinese auction, and most of all the fans, because without you, this roller derby thing that we love so much would not be possible.

We hope to see you all at our next home game on October 15th!

The Steel City Derby Demons are so excited because this Saturday is “A Black Eye Affair,” our big art auction fundraiser!  Aside from our bouts, this is the go-to event for the SCDD this year.  Peruse dozens and dozens of works of art from local artists and members of the SCDD themselves.  This will be a silent auction party that is sure to please!

Good Monday, derby fans! McShovin here to give you some updates on the recent and upcoming activities of the SCDD!

-First off, the Steel Hurtin’ took on the Windy City Rollers this weekend in Chicago, IL. Although the Hurtin’ were not able to pull out a win, they lost by a mere 30 points, making this a close and thrilling game. Windy City is one of the oldest derby leagues in the country and therefore has a great deal of experience. The outcome of this bout only further proves the Steel Hurtin’s star is rising on the national and worldwide stages of modern roller derby. Final score: Pittsburgh 117, Windy City, 147.

- We know you like roller derby, but what about bowler derby? Come join the SCDD for a bowl-a-thon fundraiser at Arsenal Lanes in Lawrenceville on Saturday, August 6th. The fun goes from 6 – 9 pm where there will be fun games, cool prizes, and a strike contest. $10 gets you in on the fun!

- So what if you aren’t a big bowler? Maybe fine art is more your speed? Well, like a shiny new pair of glittery spandex booty shorts, we will have you covered but still interested. Presenting “A Black-Eye Affair,” an art auction fundraiser on Saturday, August 27th at Modern Formations art gallery on Penn Ave. Enjoy complimentary food and drink as you peruse and bid on 30+ works of art donated by local artists and SCDD skaters themselves. There will also be a chinese auction for smaller items. Vodka, beer, wine, and food will be provided by the likes of Boyd & Blair Vodka, Burgatory, Avenue B, and The Square Cafe! - Forget about True Blood this season (for real, quit changing all of my favorite character’s personalities) Did you see US on the TV????? WTAE Channel 4 visited our last bout and did this great piece on us. Check it out if you missed it! The only mistake is that they said we play a bout every week.  We wish we did, but being self-owned and operated, the funding for that would be impossible.  We forgive you WTAE!  Thank you so much for checking us out and giving us a boost of support!

Thanks to all of the fans who came out to skate, limbo, and dance at the SCDD skating party fund raiser last weekend.  A great time was had by all!  The SCDD is skater owned and operated and it takes support from fans like you to keep us going.

As some of you may or may not know, The Steel City Derby Demons is a skater-owned and operated organization.  Neither the skaters, referees, or non-skating officials receive any kind of payment for their services to the league.  The skaters themselves pay monthly dues in order to cover items such as renting our practice time at Romp n’ Roll, supplies, lodging fees for away games, and promotional materials.

The SCDD truly is a by-the-skaters, for-the-skaters establishment, and from time to time, we host fund-raisers so we can keep doing what we do best: playing roller derby.

That is why we are hosting a super-fun “Skate Into Spring” skating party this Sunday, March 27th at our bouting venue, Romp n’ Roll skating rink in Glenshaw.  There will be raffles, games and prizes.  Come skate with the members of the Steel Hurtin’, B-Unit, and Blitzburgh Bombers, as well as the fresh meat, free range skaters, refs, NSO’s, and volunteers!

On Saturday, March 19th, the Steel Hurtin’ took on the Boston Massacre, ranked 16th worldwide.  It was an away game in New England and this reporter was only there in spirit as she followed along with the Derby News Network play-by-play text cast.  The Bout started off neck and neck with each team’s jammers racing through the pack on their first pass neck-and-neck.  The first 4 jams or so were called off before anyone could score.  Then around the 5th or 6th jam, the points started accruing.  Jammers Hurricane Heather, ‘snot rocket science, The Shocker, and Mean Burrito traded turns racking up points with the likes of Boston ace jammers Claire D. Way, Lil Payne and Krush Puppy.  Boston seemed determine not to let the Steel Hurtin’ snatch the lead, keeping the point gap around 15 for the bulk of the game.  Then suddenly, late in the 2nd half, the Boston jammer went to the penalty box and the Hurtin’ capitalized on a ‘snot rocket science power jam, closing the gap.  The teams were neck and neck in the second to last jam with Steel Hurtin 101, and Boston 100 points.  The last jam of the night proved the fateful blow; however, with Boston snatching a final five points and the win.  Final score, Steel Hurtin’ 101, Boston, 105.  It was a very tough loss, but it was such a narrow defeat, that we are extremely disinclined to call it a true loss.  Good luck next time, Hurtin’!  We love to see you play such close and exciting games!

On Sunday March 20th, there was no rest for the wicked as the Hurtin’ geared up to battle the skaters of Providence Rhode Island.  Steel City snatched the lead early in this game and held on to it, thoroughly crushing their unranked opponents 181 – 93.

Next up for the Hurtin’ is Swinging London Baby, yeah.  Come skate with the Ladies of the Steel Hurtin, B-Unit and Blitzburgh Bombers on Sunday, March 27th.  The SCDD is holding a league fundraising skating party at Romp n Roll and you are all invited!  Raffles, games, and fun are sure to ensue.  Admission price is just $6.00 and it starts at 3:30 pm.  Be there or be square!
