The Steel City Derby Demons are kicking off our season with a roller derby battle to prove once and for all if love is eternal, or if everything is bound for ash and dust.

The SCDD will split ourselves into two teams: The Hopeless Romantics vs. The Blackhearts. Pick your side and cheer them on!

When: Sunday, February 5th

Time: 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm, with a special skate session afterward, all derby spectators are invited to participate!

The Steel City Derby Demons held their second annual Toys For Tots Holiday Scrimmage, Thursday night at Romp ‘n’ Roll in Glenshaw. Skaters from the Steel Hurtin’, B-Unit, Blitzburgh Bombers, and Fresh Meat divided up into the red-clad Santa’s Little Helpers and the green-garbed Grinches for a 60-minute scrimmage that featured lots of lead changes and went down to an exciting overtime jam, the first in Steel City history. The Grinches took home the 169-157 victory but more importantly, Toys For Tots took home $350 and over 100 new toys in the successful fundraiser.

The bout was close for the first few jams. With the score 10-8 in favor of Santa’s Little Helpers, Athena shot fast off the jam line for the Grinches in a no-pack second whistle but was sent to the box for a false start. Cruisin’ B. Anthony was then able to run up some points for the reds while putting a good move on Dakota Slamming. Dakota Slamming returned the favor, however, recycling Santa’s Little Jammer way to the back of the pack on her next pass. Mean Burrito then kept up the scoring for Santa, with an elfin dodge around a Grinchy damage dahl. Groovy Hott Lovey Cakes held sMelU in check as Mean Burrito’s jam ended with a revenge hit from damage dahl but a 32-12 lead for Santa’s Little Helpers.

The Grinches came back on the following jam, however, as the Shocker whipped through the pack in a green blur as her opposing jammer, REO Speedwagon, took a late trip to the box after a bit of confusion. McShovin tried to keep the powerjam going for the Grinches but a shove by Tower O’Terror forced McShovin into a cut and freed REO Speedwagon for her own powerjam. This was short-lived, however, as the Maestro played an encore by forcing a jammer cut and McShovin returned to bring the score to 47-39 now in favor of the Grinches. With the Grinch lead up to 60-50, Mean Burrito followed a good block by Helen Fire, who returned to the track after a long injury absence, to grab lead jammer as ‘snot rocket science totally shut down McShovin and eventually forced her into a penalty. Mean Burrito cranked out 22 on the powerjam to get the lead back for Santa’s Little Helpers. Still without a jammer for the next whistle, damage dahl put the clamps on a Nutcracker-garbed Death Cake for Cutie for 6 turns and then drew a penalty to switch powerjams back to green. But McShovin’s late surge was squelched by the Maestro and the first half ended with a Tiny Tim-sized 77-76 lead for Santa’s Little Helpers.

The Grinches took the lead back shortly after the second half began with McShovin playing great defense on the much taller Death Cake for Cutie, riding her out of bounds on her first pass and then forcing a cut on her second. Dakota Slamming powerjammed her way to a double-digit lead for green. The gap tightened up a bit and then ‘snot rocket science, looking forward to her trip to the Derby World Cup next month to represent Steel City on Team USA, toed the line against rookie skater Ada Bloodlace in a seeming mismatch that would get the lead back for Santa’s Little Helpers. But Ada Bloodlace, with a great apex jump, was able to beat the all-star this time and win lead jammer and keep the lead for the Grinches.

Vicious Virus and Dakota Slamming stretched the lead for the Grinches as Athena and RedRuM Blur kept Santa jammer London Blitz in the pack and then in the box. But Cruisin’ B. Anthony was able to answer with 4 natural grand slams as her blockers J-Bomb, Death Cake for Cutie, the Maestro, and Oscar De La Hurtya corralled Hissy Fit for the entire two minutes and the Grinch lead was merely 121-114. Several jams later, with time ticking down, it was the red blocking crew again with J-Bomb, the Maestro, Groovy Hott Lovey Cakes, and Atomic Bombino who were able to keep Pain Dealer Jane off the board while ‘snot rocket science recaptured the lead for Santa’s Little Helpers at 149-145 with time enough for one final jam. The Shocker was able to outskate Mean Burrito this time, however to win a textbook 4-0 as time expired with the game tied. More importantly, however, was a last-second whistle on Mean Burrito as she sprinted to try to grab that one last point. She went to the box along with J-Bomb. That meant the final overtime jam would begin with the Shocker skating unopposed for the first minute of the two-minute, no lead jamer, sudden-death jam. The Maestro, Mission Impassible, and Groovy Hott Lovey Cakes put up a valiant effort to keep the Shocker in the shorthanded pack but the advantage was too strong and the Grinches took home the 169-157 victory. It’s said that their hearts grew three sizes after that jam however, and they did not throw the donations for Toys for Tots off a mountainside. Happy Holidays and see you next year!

The Steel City Derby Demons family would like to extend an enormous thank you to everyone who came out to “A Black Eye Affair” last night.  The event was the biggest fundraiser that the SCDD has held to date and most notably Elsie Thudd, Athena, and Dresta Kill were instrumental in its planning and execution.  Visitors admired and bid on many wonderful works of art including paintings, sculpture, pottery, pen and ink drawings, photography, jewelry, stained glass, needlework and more.  Bartenders La Diabla and J-Bomb mixed drinks, B.B. Basher served as emcee, and guests ate delicious food donated by our generous sponsors.  By the end of the night, every piece of art was sold.

Thank you to all of the food sponsors, drink sponsors, volunteers, artists who donated their work, skaters and refs who helped work the event, companies who donated items for the Chinese auction, and most of all the fans, because without you, this roller derby thing that we love so much would not be possible.

We hope to see you all at our next home game on October 15th!

Good Monday, derby fans! McShovin here to give you some updates on the recent and upcoming activities of the SCDD!

-First off, the Steel Hurtin’ took on the Windy City Rollers this weekend in Chicago, IL. Although the Hurtin’ were not able to pull out a win, they lost by a mere 30 points, making this a close and thrilling game. Windy City is one of the oldest derby leagues in the country and therefore has a great deal of experience. The outcome of this bout only further proves the Steel Hurtin’s star is rising on the national and worldwide stages of modern roller derby. Final score: Pittsburgh 117, Windy City, 147.

- We know you like roller derby, but what about bowler derby? Come join the SCDD for a bowl-a-thon fundraiser at Arsenal Lanes in Lawrenceville on Saturday, August 6th. The fun goes from 6 – 9 pm where there will be fun games, cool prizes, and a strike contest. $10 gets you in on the fun!

- So what if you aren’t a big bowler? Maybe fine art is more your speed? Well, like a shiny new pair of glittery spandex booty shorts, we will have you covered but still interested. Presenting “A Black-Eye Affair,” an art auction fundraiser on Saturday, August 27th at Modern Formations art gallery on Penn Ave. Enjoy complimentary food and drink as you peruse and bid on 30+ works of art donated by local artists and SCDD skaters themselves. There will also be a chinese auction for smaller items. Vodka, beer, wine, and food will be provided by the likes of Boyd & Blair Vodka, Burgatory, Avenue B, and The Square Cafe!
