The Steel City Derby Demons are kicking off our season with a roller derby battle to prove once and for all if love is eternal, or if everything is bound for ash and dust.

The SCDD will split ourselves into two teams: The Hopeless Romantics vs. The Blackhearts. Pick your side and cheer them on!

When: Sunday, February 5th

Time: 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm, with a special skate session afterward, all derby spectators are invited to participate!

Price: $5 for singles, $8 for couples

Last year’s Toys for Tots holiday scrimmage was such a rousing success that we are doing it again!  Come and see the Santa’s Little Helpers in red take on the Grinches in green.  It’s all to benefit Toys for Tots!

Being the No. 1 seed in the east and a former world champion, the Gotham Girls are a formidable opponent, no matter who they play.

We are all proud of the Hurtin’, especially the players who are new to the team this year, including Death Cake for Cutie, Dakota Slamming, and Mean Burrito.  This game also saw the triumphant return to game play from SCDD OG Cheeseburger.

Tomorrow, the Hurtin’ will be vying for 3rd place with either Philly or Charm city, depending on how the rest of the day susses out.  If they do beat the winner of the Philly/Charm game, the Hurtin’ will be heading to Championships.

The game was very close, but the Hurtin’ carved out a 20 to 30 point lead in the first half.  Montreal chipped away and was able to close the gap to bring the score to a tie a little after half time.  However, the Hurtin’ was having none of that and they gained a sizable lead again.  At the end of the game, the Hurtin’ had prevailed with an amazing score of 134 – 88.

This is a much bigger point gap than the first time the Hurtin’ faced Montreal in April, proving again that the Hurtin’ deserved their 4th place seed over Montreal’s fifth.

The Hurtin’ will next face #1 seed the goliath Gotham Girls tomorrow Saturday September 17th at 2:00 pm.

Congrats Hurtin!!  Keep it up!

Each year, there are four regional playoff tournaments for the four WFTDA conferences.  East, West, North Central, and South Central.  The top 3 will go on to participate in the WFTDA Championship Tournament in Denver, CO.  The Steel City Derby Demons fall in the East, so we will be participating in the Nightmare on 95.

This year the Eastern conference playoffs will be held in Baltimore, MD on September 16th through the 18th.

The Steel Hurtin’ will be going head to head with the best teams in the region, including old Anarchy in the UK rivals London, Montreal, and Baltimore.  The other leagues slated to participate are Boston, Carolina, New York, Lancaster, Philly, and Maine.

Let’s recap the some of the competish:

Philly: One of the oldest and strongest teams in the world, they beat the Hurtin’ by a good margin in February.

Boston: UGH frustrating.  They beat us by FOUR POINTS (101 – 105) in March.

Montreal: The Hurtin’ defeated them narrowly in April.  They are the first opponents that the Hurtin’ will see at the Eastern playoffs!

London: The Hurtin’ defeated them heartily in April.

Baltimore: The Hurtin’ played a REALLY intense game against them in April, in which at half time, the teams were neck and neck, but in the end, Baltimore pulled out a victory.

Good Monday, derby fans! McShovin here to give you some updates on the recent and upcoming activities of the SCDD!

-First off, the Steel Hurtin’ took on the Windy City Rollers this weekend in Chicago, IL. Although the Hurtin’ were not able to pull out a win, they lost by a mere 30 points, making this a close and thrilling game. Windy City is one of the oldest derby leagues in the country and therefore has a great deal of experience. The outcome of this bout only further proves the Steel Hurtin’s star is rising on the national and worldwide stages of modern roller derby. Final score: Pittsburgh 117, Windy City, 147.

- We know you like roller derby, but what about bowler derby? Come join the SCDD for a bowl-a-thon fundraiser at Arsenal Lanes in Lawrenceville on Saturday, August 6th. The fun goes from 6 – 9 pm where there will be fun games, cool prizes, and a strike contest. $10 gets you in on the fun!

- So what if you aren’t a big bowler? Maybe fine art is more your speed? Well, like a shiny new pair of glittery spandex booty shorts, we will have you covered but still interested. Presenting “A Black-Eye Affair,” an art auction fundraiser on Saturday, August 27th at Modern Formations art gallery on Penn Ave. Enjoy complimentary food and drink as you peruse and bid on 30+ works of art donated by local artists and SCDD skaters themselves. There will also be a chinese auction for smaller items. Vodka, beer, wine, and food will be provided by the likes of Boyd & Blair Vodka, Burgatory, Avenue B, and The Square Cafe! Tickets are $25 per person, and $40 per couple. If you plan on partaking in the free booze, don’t forget your ID! - Forget about True Blood this season (for real, quit changing all of my favorite character’s personalities) Did you see US on the TV????? WTAE Channel 4 visited our last bout and did this great piece on us. Check it out if you missed it! The only mistake is that they said we play a bout every week.  We wish we did, but being self-owned and operated, the funding for that would be impossible.  We forgive you WTAE!  Thank you so much for checking us out and giving us a boost of support!
