Steel City Derby Demons Day Proclamation

WHEREAS, the Steel City Derby Demons were founded in 2005 and are Pittsburgh’s only women’s roller derby league; and
WHEREAS, the Steel City Derby Demons are skater-owned and operated entirely by volunteers; and
WHEREAS, the Steel City Derby Demons are a member of the international Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA); and
WHEREAS, the Steel City Derby Demons are currently ranked fourth in the WFTDA East Region; and
WHEREAS, the Steel City Derby Demons carry on the Pittsburgh sports tradition of wearing black and gold; and
WHEREAS, the league’s travel team, the Steel Hurtin’, competed this year against teams as far away as London; and
WHEREAS, a portion of the proceeds from each Steel City Derby Demons home game is donated to a local charity; and
WHEREAS, Jennifer Gaskins, a member of the Steel Hurtin’ whose derby name is ‘Snot Rocket Science, earned a place on Team USA for the very first Roller Derby World Cup, which will be held in Toronto this coming December; and
WHEREAS, the Steel City Derby Demons will travel to Baltimore September 16-18, 2011, for the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association Eastern Regional Tournament to compete against some of the best teams in the world for a spot in this year’s National Tournament;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the Steel City Derby Demons for their community involvement, commitment to athleticism, and positive international representation of Pittsburgh; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Pittsburgh City Council declares September 13, 2011 Steel City Derby Demons Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
